You are a young researcher and wonder how to publish? Or... You are in research for several years and you always look for ways to expand your network and show that you are collaborative, open and multidisciplinary? You want to make sure that your results have a great outreach academically and in society? Join us for OpenCon Berlin!
Scholarly Publishing and science are slow when it comes to change. Frustratingly so! Newton’s lab-books probably look similar to what PhD-students still scribble in todaybut about 300 years later! Research sticks to old habits. Other than social communication, scholarly communication is still about publishing in journals where anonymous peer reviews delay the liberation of newly gained knowledge by months, if not even years. We are still using systems that have operated for decades and centuries. But do they really still work?
Big pieces of Research prove to be not reproducible, billions of public funding become locked up behind paywalls and embargos became a bargaining chip between authors and their publishers.
Most people know this. And for quite a while the Open Access movement already criticises the situation and suggests alternative ways forward. But why then isn’t Open Science our reality ?
Let's get together and foster change. Let's dare and imagine a scholarly world without journals. What are the alternatives? How can we get there? We won't host your classic conference with lectures and maybe 5 minutes of time for "discussion". Join us to engage and think forward.
We will meet at 5PM at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society's office. It is located on several floors at Oberwallstraße 9 (entrance via Hausvogteiplatz) in Berlin. We will meet on the 6th floor.
